Have you set up in your own business having left the corporate world and are realising that it is more difficult than you first thought? Or are you thinking about it?
Here is something very significant to think about. This is a key issue that you will need to get your head around to succeed in developing your own successful business.
When I set up on my own for the first time, I experienced a large reduction in my income and was spending more time twiddling my thumbs than working. I had thought the businesses I had previously worked for were actually holding me down. What I had not appreciated was how they were actually also holding me up!
Having decided to leave their safety net and follow my passion for supporting other people with their development it became clear that more than passion was required to earn a great living.
What I found was that when you set up on your own, suddenly everything is usually down to you for a period of time. Also, you are not part of a business structure that is supporting and sometimes pushing you along to deliver results. Being part of a team, with peer and line management pressure to push you along and put you into a position where you have to follow through is very effective at helping you deliver results. It is therefore this kind of environment that we must create in our own businesses to be successful. Once I realised this missing link things began to improve.
Set up your own business and unless you put accountability processes in place then you will fail or at the best under perform. This is why if you have seen or read 'The Secret' for example, it is of limited value in helping you generate results. Thinking must be followed through with action. The reality is it is down to you to follow through. There is more than passion and motivation to being successful.
If there is some good news, it is that follow through is not a natural process instead it is one which you must learn and become very skilled at. Also, I think the world of personal development has not always helped here! There is far more to business success than 'your thoughts create things'. This is why follow through is so important at Be More.Achieve More.
I recently read a cartoon with a tramp on a bench talking to a businessman. He was saying how he had spent hours writing down his goals, reciting them and visualising his success. His competitors meanwhile had been out making sales calls!! What the tramp had been doing was very useful, however, it had to be followed through with action. You have to get into action to receive what you want. You also may need to find the people who can keep you away from our natural human tendency of lazyness.
I work with a very well known personality in his business sector. He is an extremely successful business person. Why is he investing in my help? Because he wants me to keep him accountable for following through. This is a key reason that a number of my very successful clients employ me. Yes almost all of us can slip towards being lazy and unfocused. Even those who may be perceived as having already made it!
Who is keeping you accountable and helping to hold you up?
