Is Opportunity Monopolized?

09 February 2011 by Chris Cooper

Is opportunity monopolized into the hands of the very few? This is the subject studied in Chapter 3 of 'The Science of Getting Rich' by Wallace D.Wattles. However, how is this relevant for modern day entrepreneurship, business and success?

Many people live with the view that opportunity is limited for them. You hear them complaining. 'There are no jobs about'. 'Clients just aren't buying at the moment'. 'The world is going down the plug hole'. The reality is that opportunities do abound. You just have to know what you want and really look for them and keep your mind positive.

I recently watched a programme where a number of young people were saying that there were no jobs. Yet when sent around a large shopping centre with a CV they quickly unearthed lots of opportunities. They just hadn't thought of the idea and motivated themselves to take action. They had started from a viewpoint of lack rather than abundance.

The truth is we live in an abundant world and there are so many opportunities out there. This is a really important message for the entrepreneur. The key to growing your opportunities is about developing your thinking. It is about knowing what you want and consistently working towards it. It is about keeping your mind focused on opportunity not lack. Is this difficult - yes it is! Thinking in a focused manner is hard work and takes discipline.

Why is it that in each industry there are people thriving while others are failing?Perhaps they know some things that other people do not. Only a very small % of people actually ever inherit their opportunity. However, it is believed that about 97% of the worlds wealth is controlled by about 1-2% of the population. Now before we get too critical about how unfair this distribution is, those are the people who also provide the jobs, services, pay the majority of taxes and invest in global causes and charities.

So what do they know? Well often they have stumbled on some of the key secrets behind becoming successful. They generally know what they want and have learned the skills and disciplines to realise their dreams and ambitions. Some also have a sense of who they believe they are in this world ie the role or purpose they have to play.  When through coaching I help people achieve this it is very powerful.

Wallace talks about there being a formless stuff that is intelligent that is alive and impelled towards more life. Interestingly in the Red Sea an algae has developed protecting the corals which would have been expected to die under normal circumstances. This could be the key to save other diminishing coral reefs. How intelligent is that?

Around us there is an intelligence - plants, trees, animals, humans are all growing, adapting and eventually returning to the soil! Could it be that this intelligence also responds to our dominant thoughts. Are we planting seeds in this soil which could become large trees if we tend and guard them carefully? Well there potentially lies a big clue!
