Great Businesses and Great People have Deep Foundations

11 May 2010 by Chris Cooper

I always think of my days as building the foundations for a skyscraper or wonderful building. If I want to create that building the business must have deep foundations. This means investing on building the platform for my businesses. It means making progress everyday, step by step so that they become more and more robust.

Not only that, to be able to create something that stands out, you should also ideally have deep personal foundations. You have to be more. Some people who acquire great success too early simply cannot cope when they get there. Building foundations takes time and patience just like creating a great building.

One element of personal foundations is learning to build your business with authenticity. Do this and I believe you will ultimately enjoy your work more, add more value to others and more people will be attracted to what you are doing.

A key to successful business I believe is also to make sure that whatever you do you systemise it, to reduce the amount of time you have to spend on that task in future. I know a number of very successful people who have burnt out by everything being centred on them having to do something. There is also in some people a desire to not lose control.

I for example rely now a small team of people to help me build these systems. Not being willing to lose control is a sign of the need to build deeper personal foundations as this is fear based.

If ultimately you can build something that becomes less reliant on you over time, then you will be in a better position to let others one day run it for/with you. Also if you want to be able to sell it one day, you can do it more easily and perhaps become very wealthy in the process.

Of course you also have to make money. Money to build the business and to enable you to add more value with it. Therefore you need to make sure that what you offer is in demand and attractive to your audience.

Another key to success is recognising the progress you have made. This is important, particularly when times may seem tough. Or people are questioning you following your dreams. Is he mad? He was earning all that money in the corporate world?

So what keeps me going? Gratitude is one. I am for example grateful for small things. Every time someone subscribes to my newsletter for example. This now means I get several happy moments, everyday. Also when people send me comments and feedback it is appreciated. Good and bad! If someone signs up for a free tele-seminar or joins a paid programme it also gives me a good feeling. Because I know they will receive value as the foundations are there.

If you are thinking that your efforts are being wasted, consider how much you have learned to date. How can you start to build the foundations to your skyscraper/building? What will it look like when it is finished? How proud will you be?

If you want more ideas on how to build that skyscraper subscribe to the Be More. Achieve More newsletter which includes invites to high value events. There are free tele-seminars coming up in June and July with leading experts on how to use your time more effectively (How to stop faffing about) and also overcoming challenges through understanding something called 'The Heroes Journey'. The Heroes Journey was used by George Lucas in Star Wars to create a blockbuster.
