Whatever it is that you want to do to become a Master at it
takes time and energy. To be a true Master it should also be your
passion. Why not spend your life doing something you love to do and
make your income from it?
Last night I was watching the final of the UK's Master Chef
competition. It was astonishing to see how well all three chefs
performed. This was considering that none of them were earning a
living as chefs. Sent to three Michelin star restaurants to work
they all performed like experts.
What we do not see is the years of effort that went into their
accomplishments. The challenges and frustrations on the journey to
their success. Also one of the group Tim was a Paediatric
Consultant. Despite his considerable career achievements, in his
heart he wanted to be a chef. Congratulations to them all. What a
bold move to do this on national TV.
So here is the message. Find your passion, what it is that you
love to do and are at your best when you are doing it? Think it
through carefully. If it is practical work at it. Make sure
it is worthy of your time. You do not need to end your day job. Get
really really good at your craft and then when you are ready launch
yourself into it. Go for it. Remember Rome was not built in a day.
The key is to build strong foundations first. The deeper the
foundations the stronger and potentially bigger the result.
There is no such thing as a fast route to success. However, it
is amazing what you can achieve by gradually building year on
year.

A key is that what you are doing should be a strong passion. You
have to love doing what you do to have the desire to follow
something through. Also to feel completely fulfilled. A personal
development expert quoted to me that only 2% of the population are
doing what they love to do and are moneterising it. You must have a
strong desire to overcome all of the obstacles that will block you
moving forward.
What do you love to do? What are you really at your most fulfilled
doing? What are you good at? Now you have to be good at it or
become good at it! If you could have any job what would it be?
Would you be working for yourself or someone else. Is it a job in
the company you are in? Or are you in the wrong business all
together? How would it add value to others? What ideally would be
your circumstances in 5 years time?
I made a big decision to move away from a very successful business
that I helped to create. The reality was that stripping costs out
of companies was not my passion. In places it also cut across my
values. It was a challenging call and a coach helped me come to the
decision. Since then there have been obstacles and as I progress
sometimes they get bigger. However, I have not looked back and
continue to build every day what is a much more fulfilling business
and life.
